Office of the Privacy Commissioner
Brand Refresh
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner had an issue, their brand did not reflect the important and complex work that they were doing for Aotearoa New Zealand. They needed a smarter and harder working identity to help them talk to risk and security in a privacy context.
We developed a device in whakairo called the whakarare – an element used to bewilder and confuse to represent the complex world of privacy. It’s a carving pattern of swirling elements that has been developed in a simplified fashion that is the main ownable brand element for the OPC. The whakarare has been developed by designers and illustrators adept at whakairo to ensure it retains authenticity and readability in a digital context. This became the main device for the brand as well as updated typography, colour and templates that they could use for internal and external purposes.

In collaboration with:Â Â Â SixOneNine
Four fabric of risk illustrations were created, with the ability for more to come as their main illustrative element.
From here, SixOneNine helped me to develop a series of seven small illustrations using the whakarare to depict the different areas within the OPC's remit.
These elements helped us build out the whole brand with a solid base to work from.
